In 1844, William Winn sold two enslaved people named Hagar and Robert to J.S. Fleming for $380 in Liberty County (1). J.S. Fleming was John Sidney Fleming, who died in October 1847 in the same county. (2)

In Fleming’s 1848 estate inventory, Hagar was valued at $400 and Robert at $200 (3), indicating they were either young or elderly.

At the time, John S. Fleming’s two sons were minors, and living with their mother Jane Amarintha Fleming (4). In 1860, Fleming’s estate was reappraised and divided between his son John S. Fleming and his son Thomas Q. Fleming, with Peter W. Fleming as the latter’s guardian (5). Both Robert and Hagar went to John S. Fleming; Robert was valued at $900, probably indicating he was in the prime of his life, and Hagar was valued at $800, probably indicating the same (6).

In 1861, John S. Fleming used as collateral on a debt to Peter W. Fleming “Hagar aged about twenty two.” (7) Thus Hagar was likely born about 1839, and about 5 when Winn sold her, assuming this is the same Hagar.

John S. Fleming lived until 1915 (8), so unless he sold Hagar and Robert between 1861 and 1864, it is likely that they were with him at Emancipation.
