On April 9, 1853, Phineas M. Kollock, of Chatham County, used as collateral on three promissory notes of $3200 [total] to Mary Helen Johnston, also of Chatham County, “two certain negro Slaves named Jeffry and Amy..” along with “all those two third parts, being the Northern and Southern third parts of a tract of land situate lying and being on the Island of St. Catherine’s in the County of Liberty and State of Georgia, of which the late Colonel James Johnston died seized [of] the said Northern third part, being the same conveyed by George Jones to Phineas Millar Kollock by deed bearing date the third day of June in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty two and recorded in the Clerk’s office of the Superior Court of the County of Liberyt in Book I. folios 364 365…[more description of the land]…” Witnessed by John B. Miller, Robert M. Charlton, Not. Pub. Recorded on April 25, 1853 by [Liberty County Superior Court Clerk] S.A. Fraser.
