On March 19, 1853, Joseph Way used as collateral on a promissory note of $1775 to Sarah Jane Way, guardian of Anne Caroline and Jane Augustua Way minors of Nathaniel J. Way deceased, “the following negro slaves to wit, July about thirty five years and Charlotte about 40 and her child named [left blank] and a woman named Miley about 25 years and a boy Cuff about 10 years of age.”
