Used as Collateral (Bacon/Matlock)

Enslaved Persons Named: Joe, Abram

On February 2, 1853, Henry W. Bacon and Julia Ann Bacon used as collateral on a promissory note of $321 “two certain negro men named Joe and Abram.” The promissory note was made out to Stephen Matlock or bearer, and Charlton Hines had been named as an endorser for the note, so the Bacons put up the collateral in order “to secure the said Charlton Hines from any loss of damage from said endorsement.” Witnessed by John N.R. Green, Tucker Maulden. [NOTE: Written on the deed was “Satisfied in full. C. Hines. 4 Septr 1854. Entered this 4 Septr 1854. S.A. Fraser, C.S.C.”]
