Enslaved Persons Named: Grace, Will Ned, Watly [alt: Watley], Sam, Binah, Rachel, Jack

On October 19, 1852, Raymond Harris used as collateral on a promissory note of $3500 to James F. Baker, through his agent George W. Walthour, “the following negro slaves Grace, Will Ned, Watly [alt: Watley], Sam, Binah, Rachel, Jack” along with a 450-acre tract of land bounded north by the Midway River, east by salt marshes, south by lands of Roswell King, and west by lands of Mrs. Ann Hart. Witnessed by William E. Scriven [alt: Screven], W.L. Walthour, and probated by W.L. Walthour on December 18, 1852. Recorded on December 18, 1852. Attached to the deed was a note from J.A. Baker to S.A. Fraser, Clerk, stating that Dr. Raymond Harris had paid his note given to “my father James F. Baker through his agent Geo. W. Walthour for the sum of thirty five hundred dollars, bearing interest from the 29th of November 1852,” and requesting that the mortgage be cancelled. Fraser wrote on the note that the cancellation was entered in the record book on July 13, 1854.
