Enslaved Persons Named: John

On January 1, 1850, Thomas B. Coleman, formerly of Liberty County but currently of Bridgeport, Connecticut, sold to William G. Martin, Liberty County, for $540 “one certain negro slave about twenty eight years of age named John..” Witnessed by Dwight Morris, Daniel Wheeler, J.P. of the town of Fairfield. 

A subsequent deed directed William G. Martin to pay to William S. Norman of Liberty County $540 for the above transaction. 

Following that was a deed in which William J. Coleman and John Coleman relinquished their claim “to a certain negro man named John both for ourselves and our heirs and assigns forever unto William G. Martin…” 

Recorded on March 27, 1850, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk [of Liberty County].
