On November 26, 1849, Archibald Wilkins, of Hancock County but formerly of Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note to John Phinizy, Richmond County, a 1600-acre tract of land in Jefferson County and “the following negroes now in Liberty County aforesaid but to be removed to said Land to wit Susannah about thirty five years of age Jane about fourteen Sarah about twelve Lucy about ten Cornelius about one year old Lisbon about thirty five Rose his wife about thirty Ben about fifteen Rachael about twelve Sarah about four Lisbon about six months old Jacob about twenty five Celia about twenty Charlotte about four Joe about two Cassandra about thirty five Ben (driver) about forty Betty about twenty seven and Gabe about eight years old.” Wilkins warranted the title “to the above named negroes free of all claim or incumbrance whatever except a balance not exceeding three thousand now due on a previous mortgage on the same originally made to Zachariah M. Winkler now assigned to George W. Anderson and Brother.” Attached were four promissory notes made by Wilkins in favor of John Phinizy.  Witnessed by Robert M. Phinizy, John W Beckman. [NOTE: This deed was originally contracted in Jefferson County but was recorded in Liberty County on December 22, 1849, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.]
