Bill of Sale (Baker/Harman)

Enslaved Persons Named: Abram, Will, Diana

On December 31, 1849, William E.W. Quarterman, acting as trustee for Elizabeth Baker, wife of Richard F. Baker, sold to Wm. [William] ?Harman?, all of Liberty County, a “negro slave Abram about thirty five years of age” for $650. This was based on a February 25, 1848, agreement between Quarterman and Richard F. Baker in which the latter conveyed to Quarterman, as his wife’s trustee, “certain negro slaves,” and agreed that Quarterman had the authority to sell this property upon application by Elizabeth Baker. They agreed that “it appears that it would be advantageous to the interests of said parties considered in said trusts that a certain negro slave named Abram, being a part and portion of said Trust estate, should be sold in order to purchase two other certain negro slaves named Will and Diana.
