Marriage Settlement (Anderson/Jones)

Enslaved Persons Named: Bella, Leonard, Lucy

On March 20, 1849, Joseph A. Anderson sold to Charles B. Jones and Henry H. Jones, trustees for Anderson’s wife Evelyn, “the following negro slaves Bella, Leonard and Lucy” in exchange for $1200, to maintain for the use and benefit of his wife. Anderson specified that, per their marriage contract, dated January 18, 1843, and recorded in Liberty County Book M, Folios 40-42, he had requested the trustees to sell him a 950-acre tract of land, in his own right, known as ?McLowland?, previously owned by James S. McCollough. He stated that this land had “some time before these presents” been sold to his wife’s trustees, and then re-conveyed to Anderson on March 15, 1849, for $1200. [NOTE: It appears that Anderson may have conveyed these enslaved people to the trustees in lieu of the $1200.]
