On April 25, 1849, Dr. Benjamin B. King, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $1500 to William J. Way and William King “merchants and copartners doing business in the City of Savannah County of Chatham and State of Georgia…under the firm of Way & King” “the following named negro slaves to wit Andrew, Elick [alt: Ellick], Isaac, Sarah and her children Nancy & Thomas.” King specified that this mortgage was not only to cover his current indebtedness to Way & King but also future debts he might incur from them.” Witnessed by Charles S. Henry, John E. Ward Not. Pub. Recorded on April 16, 1849, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.
