On December 27, 1853, William E. Screven used as collateral on a promissory note to Thomas S. Mallard, both of Liberty County, a tract of land bounded north by Joseph A. anderson, Benjamin S. Screven, and Mrs. Marry Harris’ estate, south by Benjamin Screven and Dr. G. Frank Maxwell and west by Estate of Dr. B.B. King, “together with the following property to wit two negro fellows named Charles and June about thirty years of age more or less.” Witnessed by Thos. Mallard, Wm. S. Baker, L.J. Mallard.  Recorded on May 3, 185?, by S.A. Fraser, Clerk. [NOTE: Written on the deed was “Satisfied July 6th 1858 in Savannah. Thos. J. Mallard. Entered this 8th July 1858. S.A. Fraser, Clerk.”]
