Enslaved Persons Named: Sam, little Sam, Tom, Lizzy, Hetty, Jim, John, Affee, Gilbert, Phebe, Celia and Dian

On December 31, 1847, Edwin H. Bacon appeared before Liberty County Justice of the Peace David Zoucks, with his “securities” Sarah H. Bacon, Oliver Stevens, and Charlton Hines. He acknowledged that they owed to James B. Mell, Liberty County, $6000 but swore out a “possession warrant” again James B. Mell for the seizure of “twelve certain negros vis Sam, little Sam, Tom, Lizzy, Hetty, Jim, John, Affee, Gilbert, Phebe, Celia and Dian.” Mell and “said negroes” were “taken into the possession of S.S. Moody Sheriff,” who brought them before J.P. Zoucks. Zoucks ordered “said negroes” to be put into the possession of E.H. Bacon. Witnessed by J.P. Stevens, David Zoucks, J.P. Recorded on December 26, 1848, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.
