Deed of Gift (Coleman)

Enslaved Persons Named: Cyrus, Rose, Clarissa, Nancy, Dick, [Ben or Bess or Rose ??]

On January 3, 1848, William J. Coleman, Liberty County, out of a desire to “make some permanent and suitable provisions for my said wife and children to guard them against the misfortunes to which all mankind are liable,” gifted to his wife Sarah C. Coleman “and her children” “the following negro slaves to wit Cyrus, Rose, Clarisssa, Nancy, Dick, and [Ben, Bess, Rose??]. The gift was made through her trustees, John S. Bradley and Enoch Daniel. Coleman retained the right to “manage and plant with and conduct the hiring or working of said negroes,” with the proceeds being used for his, his wife’s and their children’s support. Witnessed by Wm. B. Smith, J.S. Bradwell Clk, Sup. Court, L.C. Recorded on March 31, 1848, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.
