Marriage Settlement (Leonard/Stevens)

Enslaved Persons Named: Isaac, Abram, William, Dick, Maria, Betty, Charlotte, Prince, Richard, Judy, Die [alt: Dye], Andrew, Judson, Joe, Henry, Josephine, Abram, Bellah, Emily, Jane

On December 23, 1847, Mary J. Leonard, Liberty County, entered into a marriage contract with Joseph L. Stevens, also of Liberty County, with William S. Norman s trustee. “Whereas the said Mary J. Leonardis now lawfully seized and possessed of the following personal estate consisting of the following personal estate consisting of the following negro slaves viz Isaac, Abram, William, Dick, Maria, Betty, Charlotte, Prince, Richard, Judy, Die, Andrew, Judson, Joe, Henry, Josephine, Abram, Bellah, Emily, Jane & also one tract of land lyin in Walthourville containing twenty six acres, together with dwelling house and out hosues on which the said Mary J. Leonard now lives…” “And it is further agreed to by the parties of the first and second, that the two children Francis R. Leonard and Geo. [George] Walthour Leonard shall be fed clothed and plainly educated in the family of the said Mary J. Leonard, until they are twenty one years of age, after she becomes the wife of the said Joseph L. Stevens, from the income arising from the labour of said trust property…” Joseph Stevens was permitted the use of the “said property” with William S. Norman’s permission. Witnessed by E.J. Delegal, B.W. Allen, W.G. [one word]. Recorded on January 24, 1848, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.
