On May 24, 1859, Wm. John Way, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $800 to George W. Walthour “”a negro slave by the name Numan [alt: Newman] about eighteen years of age and a negro slave by the name Seaborn about sixteen years of age.” Witnessed by M.E. Stacy, W.E.W. Quarterman, J.I.C.S.C. Recorded on May 30, 1859, by S.A. Fraser, Clerk. [NOTE: Written on deed was “I James D. McConnell Attorney for mortgagee do hereby acknowledge full satisfaction of the debt to secure the payment of which the within mortgage was executed. Signed in presence of E.B. Way. James D. McConnell Atty for Mortgagee. Entered this 19th March 1862. S.A. Fraser, Clerk.”]
