On February 21, 1859, Thomas W. Quarterman used as collateral on a promissory notes of $800 and $2900 to James S. McCullough, “substituted trustee under the will of Thomas Quarterman for Henry Hickman, Ruby Hickman and Mary Jane Hickman, minors…” “the following negro slaves viz. Mars, Jim, Ward, Tenah, China [looked like Chaney in a different document], Miley, Lewis, Prince, Caty, Jonah, and Nero. And also one tract or parcel of land situated lying and being in the County of Liberty and State of Georgia known as the Griffin Plantation containing four hundred and twenty five acres more or less bounded as follows on the north by lands of George W. Walthour and others on the east by lands of Est. C.B. Jones on the south by lands of Est. C.B. Jones and on the west by lands of Alexander S. Quarterman…” Witnessed by Geo. [George] W. Walthour, A.S. Morrall, Jeremiah Baker. Recorded on March 12, 1859, by S.A. Fraser, Clerk.
