Marriage Contract (Varnedoe/Crawford)

Enslaved Persons Named: Isaac, Hannah and her children Billy, Isaiah, Nancy, Toby, Martha and her children Cato, Prime, London, Jane, Noble, Cornelia & Patsey and old Nancy

On November 16, 1858, Matilda Varnedoe, Liberty County, entered into a marriage contract with John A. Crawford, Merriwether County, with Samuel M. Varnedoe, Liberty County, acting as her trustee. In the contract, Crawford agreed that Matilda should put into a trust her ownership in her own right of “the following negro slaves to wit Isaac Hannah and her children Billy, Isaiah  Nancy Toby Martha and her children Cato prime London Jane Noble Cornelia & Patsey and old Nancy and also of one undivided tenth portion of the Estate Real & Personal of Mrs. H.M. Varnedoe late of Liberty County deceased, and also a certain promissory note drawn and signed by S.M. Varnedoe for two thousand dollars dated fifteenth of November eighteen hundred and fifty eight and made payable on the first of March eighteen hundred and sixty eight, togethe with other estate real and personal not particularly enumerated.” Conditions for inheritance of the trust were detailed. Witnessed by F.N. Bowman, C.C. Varnedoe, and L.L. Varnedoe Not. Pub. Recorded on December 8, 1858.
