Enslaved Persons Named: Cluttus [or Chittus], Toby

On June 2, 1857, John S. Bradley and E.Q. Andrews, executors of the estate of Joshua F. Beasley, conveyed to J.E. Zoucks “one woman named Cluttus [ or Chittus] & valued at five hundred dollars, and a boy by the name of Toby and valued at five hundred and fifty dollars and also two hundred and eleven dollars and 76/100 in full entire and complete satisfaction of all the right title interest property claim or demand…” upon the estate. Witnessed by Wm. Harrison, W.P. Girardeau O.L.C. Recorded on June 9, 1857, by S.A. Fraser, Clerk. [NOTE: This enslaved woman’s name was spelled Chittis in the 1848 inventory for Beasley, and she was listed with five children: Matilda, Suck [alt: Sukey, Sucky], Tira, Toby, and an unnamed infant.]
