On April 28, 1857, James S. Mikell, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $147.53 to John W. Coates “a negro boy the slave & property of the said Jas. S. Mikell the said Slave is known by the name of Charles dark complexion and is eight years of age.” Witnessed by W.A. Fleming, S.A. Fraser, C.S.C.L.C., and recorded by S.A. Fraser on April 28, 1857.
