Estate Transfer (Winn)

Enslaved Persons Named: Sukey, Juddy [alt: Judy], Margaret, Rosanna, and Katy

On June 18, 1856, Elizabeth R.N. Winn filed a document citing a Liberty County Superior Court decision in the April term ordering Thomas W. Fleming, executor of James W. Winn’s estate, to pay her $1000 in return for release of her claim against the estate for dower rights or maintenance, except for her annuity specified in the will. The document said that the jury also ordered that Fleming put into Elizabeth R.N. Winn’s possession “the following negro slaves to wit, Sukey, Juddy [alt: Judy], Margaret, Rosanna, and Katy, and the sum of twelve hundred dollars per annum for the maintenance, education and support of the other complainants, the minor children of the said testator, whenever the income of the Estate shall amount to that sum, and that no hire shall be paid for such slaves.” Elizabeth Winn acknowledged receipt of the $1000, with interest dating from April 16, 1855, and relinquished her rights against the estate, except for the annuity. She also acknowledged receipt of the named “negro Slaves.” Witnessed by Alex. S. Quarterman, William S. Norman, Notary Public. Recorded on August 2, 1856, by S.A. Fraser, Clerk.
