On January 25, 1856, George W. Walthour used as collateral on a loan of $5000 to Henry R. Fort “the following named negro slaves, Sam, Lizzy, Dinah, Phoebe, Celia, John, Gilbert, Jim, Hetty, Jane, Clarra [alt: Clara], Isaac, Washington, Sam Jr, William and Tom.” This was based on a marriage settlement between Anna Maria Bacon and James B. Mell, both of Liberty County, and Henry R. Fort, Chatham County, on October 18, 1847. [NOTE: Written on this deed was: “The execution issued on judgment of foreclosure of the within mortgage has been satisfied by Geo. W. Walthour Trustee of Defendant, Savannah, Jany 18, 1859.” “Entered this 1st Feby 1859. S.A. Fraser, Clerk.” COMMENT: This was a lengthy and complicated legal document, and was only summarized here very briefly to document the names of the enslaved persons mentioned.]
