Bill of Sale (Jones)

Enslaved Persons Named: William, Polly, Daphne (or Daphine), Charity, Moses, Tenah, infant

On October 13, 1855, John Jones, of Liberty County, transferred to to L.J. Mallard, of Liberty County, and John F. Dunwoody, of McIntosh County, as trustees for his wife, Jane A. Jones, “the following slaves together with the issue of the females, namely William a carpenter aged twenty seven years, Polly wife of William aged twenty two years, Daphne [or Daphine] aged four years, Charity aged two years, and Moses aged six months, children of William and Polly, and Tenah aged twenty one years and her infant.” This was in exchange for $2900 paid him by James Smith, identified as Jane A. Jones’ grandfather. Also, “…although said property is free from the debts liability and sale of the said John Jones, that he does retain in his own power and control the management, labor, and avails of said property.” Witnessed by W.Q. Baker, T.W. Quarterman, J.P. Recorded on October 16, 1855, by S.A. Fraser, C.S.C.
