Enslaved Persons Named: China

On May 12, 1852, Richard F. Baker, Liberty County, transferred to his daughter “one certain negro girl named China about fourteen or fifteen years of age,” through his daughter’s trustee, William E.W. Quarterman. Baker’s daughter was Martha A.H. Bacon, wife of William D. Bacon, “formerly of Chatham County.” China was to be Martha’s property throughout her natural life, and then be left to her children; if she had no children, she would be left to William D. Bacon “in fee simple forever.” Martha was also referred to as “Martha Ann” in the deed. Witnessed by Moses W. Way, Benjamin Darsey J.P. Recorded on June 2, 1854, by S.A. Fraser, Clerk.
