Free Persons of Color: 1852-1864

The following is from a register called “Enrollment of Free Persons of Color” for the years 1852 through 1864 which has been digitized and is included in the middle of an otherwise unrelated record set on FamilySearch.org.

Transcriber’s Notes: Where someone is listed as having children, I believe the names following her name to be her children. It appears that Margaret’s two children are Sam and Matilda, and Susan’s three children are William, Tirah and Henry. It also seems likely that Eliza may have three children: Benjamin Lawrence, Laura Bell, Joseph Luther, and an unnamed infant, though this is less certain since she is not identified as having children, but the apparent childrens’ names follow hers in age order.
