Peter W. Fleming, Thomas W. Fleming and William R. Fleming on February 3, 1860, used the following group of slaves to secure the payment of a bond to John R. Mallard. For payment of $5, they mortgaged: “the following negro slaves, with the issue of the females – viz. Patrick about thirty one years of age – Daniel about 31 years old – Bob about 29 years old – George about 33 years old – Billy about 31 years old – William about 16 years old – Lindy about 38 years old – Betsey about 51 years old – Elizabeth about 33 years old – Mary about 21 years old – Chloe about 20 years old – Adaline about 17 years old – Brister about 14 years old – Hannah about 12 years old – Sandy about 10 years old – Louisa about ?6? Years old – Eddy about 4 years old – Susan about 2 years – Carsine (?) about 3 years old – Isaac about 11 years old – Bellinger about 5 years old – Rasine [or Rasino] about 2 years old – Peter about 1 ½ years old – Eliza about 3 years old – Martha about 32 years old – Tamar about 28 years old – Silvey about 44 years old – Georgiann about 20 years old – Scipio about 22 years old – Cate about 18 years old – Stephen about 14 years old – ??Balina?? About 12 years old – Charles about 9 years old – Toney about 48 years old – Lucy about 4 years old – Hannah 1 year old – Hannah 2 years – Bess 46 years – Billy 29 years – Nanny 23 years – Cornelia 16 years – Clara 14 years – Julia 10 years – Minerva 12 years – Willard 8 years and Matilda 5 years of age.” Also mortgaged was a 400-acre tract of land adjoining lands of John B. Mallard, W.Q. Baker, Dr. Sam’l Way, and Est. John S. Fleming. Terms of payment of the bond were outlined and were to be paid in annual payments between March 1861 and March 1865. Witnessed by ?T F. Linder?, Wm. ? Stevens, S.A. Fraser, C.S.C.L.C. Witness to the signature of W.B. Fleming was T. M. Stuart, James D. McConnell, N.P. Recorded on April 17, 1860 by Jesse Brewer, Clerk.
A separate document on the next page bound Peter W. Fleming, Thomas W. Fleming and William B. Fleming to pay to John R. Mallard a total of $25,000 – terms as in the previous document, and was recorded on April 17, 1860. It was marked as “Satisfied in Full, March 2d 1861 [Signed] Jno. B. Mallard. Entered this March 4, 1861 [Signed] Jesse Brewer C.S.C.L.C.]
