Value of enslaved persons: $55025.00 (1st appraisal), $47200.00 (2d appraisal)

Comments: On 2 September 1861, Simon A. Fraser, W.Q. Baker, P.W. Fleming, Abial Winn and E.J. Delegal were authorized to conduct an inventory and appraisal of the goods and chattels of Thomas Mallard’s estate. The five of them swore on 8 October 1861 before John B. Mallard that they would conduct such an inventory, and on 9 October 1861 presented the inventory, which was recorded by W.P. Girardeau, the Liberty County Ordinary, on 4 January 1862. The inventory included 125 enslaved persons with a total value of $55025.00. On 17 December 1861, W.Q. Baker, P.W. Fleming, S.A. Fraser, E.J. Delegal and Valentine Grest were authorized to make an appraisement and division & distribution of Thomas Mallard’s estate. [Note that Abial Winn is missing this time, and Valentine Grest has taken his place.] The 2d appraisal included 115 enslaved people for a total value of $47200.00.

The following people were listed in the 1st appraisal but not the 2d. The ones with an asterisk by their names were named in Thomas Mallard’s will: Bob, Windsor*, Willoughby*, James*, Pompey*, Henrietta*, Peggy, Joe, Daniel*, Tirah (or Tyrah)*, Drusilla*, Ellen, Mary*, Hurcules*, Stepney*.

The valuation of two individuals changed between the two appraisals: Abram, from $750 to $600, and Edward, from $600 to $550. In addition, Bartholomew was listed in the estate division, but not in either of the appraisals. There were also two unnamed infants listed in the 1st appraisal;  in the 2d appraisal one was still listed as “infant” and the second was now listed as Mary, an infant. Mary the infant (based on valuation) is listed in the division, and there is also a 3d infant now listed in the division (perhaps a newborn?).

Also note that there are two Bob’s, both valued at $750, listed in both appraisals. One is said to be 25 years old; the age of the other is not listed. However, only one Bob is listed in the division, in lot 5, so it is impossible to know which Bob that was. I have arbitrarily assigned lot 5 to the 25-year-old Bob.

During the division, the estate was divided into 10 lots, and money was exchanged among the heirs to make each lot come out equal in value. The following list has the names of the winners of each lot:

Lot 1 was drawn by L.L. Varnedoe (value $4775)
Lot 2 was drawn for Miss Louisa Mallard (value $4550)
Lot 3 was drawn by John B. Mallard (value $4800)
Lot 4 was drawn for the estate of C. S. Mallard (value $4675)
Lot 5 was drawn for Mrs. R.E. Mallard (heirs of Mrs. Rebeca E. Mallard) (value $4850)
Lot 6 was drawn by L.J. Mallard (value $4725)
Lot 7 was drawn by B.A. Busbey [alt: Busby] (value$4700)
Lot 8 was drawn by Thomas S. Mallard (value $4650)
Lot 9 was drawn by Rev’d R.Q. Mallard (value $4750)
Lot 10 was drawn for Mrs. Harriet Bacon ($4720)

The list of enslaved persons below has all the individuals named in the appraisals, together with a number indicating which lot they went into. Names without a number in the lot column were not included in the division.

NOTE: The name Ellick in the list below was incorrectly transcribed as Elliott, and was corrected here on 3/27/2020.

These antebellum estate inventories and appraisals generally included all the deceased person’s “property,” including enslaved persons. Only those names are documented here for historical and genealogical purposes. Anyone interested in the actual property owned by the deceased may find it at the link at the bottom of the page. Names are listed in the original order, as this often gives very valuable information about family groupings or the age of children (who may be listed in age order).
