Enslaved People Named: Tom

On August 5, 1834, at a Sheriff’s sale at the Bryan County Courthouse, Thomas J. Charlton purchased “a negro man slave, named Tom” for $250, as the highest bidder. Tom had been seized from Thomas B. Baker, administrator for the estate of Alexander Netherclift, based on a lawsuit against Baker by William Inglish in Bryan County Superior Court. Witnessed by Solomon Smith. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on August 27, 1834.
